Veedhkaal and Akamveedhkaal are the third and fourth leg movements respectively among the 64 leg movement methods of kalaripayattu. These leg movements are helpful to improve the ability to run and walk for longer distances, to strengthen each vertebrae of backbone and legs and also improves the performance of akam naadi and puram naadi which are known as two important nerves among our nervous system as per Kalari marma. These two leg movements are vastly used in verumkai or bare hand fighting of kalaripayattu which are also known as left hand and right hand of verumkai and makes it very fast, aggressive and effective. Its practice are helpful to improve performance of certain other techniques of kalaripayattu like 'othadipongi to Garudanila', 'Nilampatiyamarnu to koormavadivu', to improve the curve ness and strength while performing 'vyalipokkam', to improve the perfection of 'chilandhivadivu', and also to improve the strength of 'vattachuvadu'. Its practice will improve the performance of marma spots, joints and nerves located at back area and both legs of body and also to normalize the blood pressure levels related to legs along with the prevention of diseases like varicose vain. The regular practice of these leg movements will also help to recover from obesity, to remove tumors found inside internal organs, to improve performance of the major arteries and veins of heart, to open up more alveolar sacs of lungs, to remove excess fat from abdomen and to maintain structure of abdominal muscles and rib cage. While performing Veedhkaal, feet must be placed similar to the distance and position exactly to our normal walking pattern holding both hands up and instructions in old kalari language is as follows. 'Idathu kaal munnil vach - valath-puramveedh eduth - valath munnil vach - idathu-puramveedh eduth' and repeat the same in normal walking Pattern. While performing puramveedhkaal, feet must be placed similar to the distance, holding both hands up and instructions in old kalari language is as follows. 'Idathu kaal munnil vach - valath-akamveedh eduth - valath munnil vach - idathu-akamveedh eduth' and repeat the same in normal walking Pattern. The massage therapy for veedhkaal and akamveedhkaal are meant only for Kalari students who are facing any major structural difficulties to perform them perfectly.
